In a nutshell
Beekeeping is an important socio-economic activity, providing hive products such as honey or wax and pollination to crops and wild flora. One of the main causes for honey bee colony losses we observe these last decades is the invasive ectoparasite Varroa destructor. To date, there is no sustainable solution available against this mite based on medicinal treatments or on resistance breeding, the latter being envisioned as the more desirable solution. Hence, a new approach is urgently needed to improve the selection of V. destructor resistant honey bees. In this SNF funded project, we will develop metagenomics and natural selection approaches bypassing the current limitations. To support the research team, we are looking for a molecular biology technician to prepare samples for genomics. Possession of a driving licence is desirable.
Our benefits
Good food, healthy environment

Headquartered in Bern-Liebefeld (as of 2026: Posieux), Agroscope is attached to the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER.
Additional information
The Centre for Bee Research Centre (BRC) researches in the spheres of bee health, beekeeping practice, selection, and quality of beekeeping products. The BRC focuses on developing effective methods for controlling and preventing diseases as well as on the interrelationship between honey bees and wild bees. The legal task concerning the evaluation of the risk to pollinators of the new plant protection products is another essential mission of the BRC.
